Clan Melville descends from Guillaume de Malleville, a Norman companion of William the Conqueror, whose descendants received lands in Midlothian, later named Melville, during the reign of David I. Galfridus de Melville served as Scotland's first Justiciary under three successive kings. The family's fortunes merged with the Leslies through the 1655 marriage of George Melville to the granddaughter of the 1st Earl of Leven, and by 1707 the Earldoms of Melville and Leven were united in one line, a union that survives today under Alexander Ian Leslie-Melville
