About this tartan

The Muirhead surname is territorial, describing someone who lived at the head or end of a moor, and the family is considered one of the oldest in Lanarkshire, with records from the late 14th century onward. Their principal line, the Muirheads of Lauchope, held land near Cadder and expanded their influence through the 15th and 16th centuries; Andrew Muirhead served as Bishop of Glasgow from 1455. The family suffered devastating losses at Flodden in 1513
