Clan Ross descends from the medieval Earls of Ross, the first of whom, Fearchar mac an t-sagairt ("son of the priest"), was recognized as Earl by Alexander II in 1234, a title referencing his descent from the hereditary abbots of Applecross. The clan's ancestral territory, the earldom of Ross, lay in the northern Highlands between the Cromarty and Dornoch Firths. Rosses fought for Robert the Bruce during the Wars of Independence, with one chief captured twice while protecting the Bruce's family, and the clan later fought Norse forces at the Battle of Largs in 1263
