About this tartan

Clan Rutherford is a Borders family centred on the Jedburgh district of Roxburghshire, with charter evidence placing a Rutherford witnessing a David I document around 1140. Tradition also tells of an early namesake who guided a Scottish king across a ford on the River Tweed. The clan became known for fierce participation in Border warfare, notably at the 1575 Battle of the Redeswire under Thomas Rutherfurd, the 'Black Laird of Edgerston.' During the Civil War, Andrew Rutherford was made Lord Rutherford and later Governor of Tangier
