About this tartan

Clan Stewart descends from Walter FitzAlan, a Breton-Norman noble who came north with David I around 1124 and was appointed hereditary High Steward of Scotland, an office that gave the family its surname. The sixth High Steward married Robert the Bruce's daughter Marjorie, and their son became King Robert II in 1371, founding a royal dynasty that held the Scottish and later the English thrones until 1714. In the sixteenth century, Mary, Queen of Scots introduced the French-influenced spelling 'Stuart.' Because the main Stewart line became the royal family, the wider clan itself lost a distinct chiefly line and is today classed as armigerous, with the Earls of Galloway regarded as its senior surviving branch, though not formally its chiefs
