Clan Turnbull is a Scottish Borders clan whose origin is told through the legend of William of Rule, who is said to have saved Robert the Bruce from a charging wild bull around 1315, earning the name 'Turnebull' and a grant of land near Philiphaugh. The Turnbulls became known as one of the most turbulent of the Border reiving families, holding strongholds including Bedrule Castle, Fatlips Castle, Barnhills Tower and Fulton Tower across Roxburghshire and Selkirkshire. Their reputation for lawlessness was such that, according to clan tradition, they were the only family to have a bounty placed on them by a Scottish king
