About this tartan
Clan Wallace is a Lowland clan of Ayrshire and Renfrewshire whose ancestors arrived in Scotland with a Breton family during the Norman period, in the service of Walter FitzAlan, Steward to David I. The clan's most celebrated member is Sir William Wallace, the late-13th-century leader of Scottish resistance against English rule, though the wider clan's history extends well beyond him, with branches including Wallace of Craigie, Wallace of Elderslie, and Wallace of Auchenbathie. Unlike many other Lowland clans, Clan Wallace has retained an unbroken line of recognition, and today's chief, formally recognized by the Lord Lyon, is titled the 36th Chief of the Name and Arms of Wallace, with a historic seat at Craigie Castle in Ayrshire.
