The Butter Legacy
The Butter family (also spelled Buttar or Butters) has held land in Perthshire since at least the twelfth century, centered on Faskally (Fascally) near Pitlochry. The surname may derive from a Gaelic term for a cattle road. Records from the fourteenth through sixteenth centuries show the family drawn into local feuds typical of the era, including a 1554 outlawry tied to a killing in a feud with the Blairs of Balthycock, and a 1598 siege of a neighboring laird's house. In the nineteenth century the family turned to military service, with Lieutenant Colonel Archibald Butter of Faskally serving through the Crimean War and the Indian Mutiny. Butter is an armigerous name today, with no Lord Lyon-recognized chief, though the family's senior line remains connected to Perthshire.
