The Chalmer Legacy

Chalmer (more commonly spelled Chalmers) is recorded as a sept of Clan Cameron of Lochaber, one of the historic Highland clans centered on Achnacarry. The surname itself is occupational in origin, deriving from the Older Scots/French term for a 'chamberlain' -- someone responsible for managing a household chamber -- and it also appears independently in Lowland records outside any clan structure. As a sept name, Chalmer/Chalmers does not carry its own chief; families claiming clan kinship through this name have traditionally looked to the Chief of Clan Cameron.

The surname Chalmers derives from the Anglo-Norman/Old French office of 'chamberlain' (chambre, a private-chamber steward serving a king, bishop, or noble), rather than from a Gaelic patronymic. It is first recorded in Scotland in the 12th century. Later clan-society sept lists connect Chalmers/Chambers to either Clan Cameron (via a tradition that a Cameron serving as 'Camerarius' in French royal service anglicized his name to Chalmers) or, in other sources, to Clan Campbell; neither link is a documented genealogical descent, and such sept lists were largely compiled in the 19th century for the tartan trade.
