The Douglas Legacy

Clan Douglas takes its name from the Douglas Water in Douglasdale, South Lanarkshire, where the family is first recorded in the 12th century. Rising through royal service and battlefield loyalty, the Douglases became, after the royal Stewarts, the single most powerful noble house in medieval Scotland. Sir James Douglas, a close companion of Robert the Bruce known as the "Black Douglas," helped secure Scottish independence and was entrusted with carrying Bruce's heart toward the Holy Land after the king's death. Later generations split into rival branches that at times rivaled the Crown itself in wealth and influence, leading to repeated forfeitures and conflicts with the Stewart kings. No individual is currently recognized by the Lord Lyon as chief of Clan Douglas; the Duke of Hamilton is generally regarded as the senior representative of the wider Douglas name today.

Clan Douglas (the House of Douglas) takes its name from Douglas, South Lanarkshire, and its likely true progenitor was Theobald the Fleming, granted lands near Douglas Water around 1147. From these origins the Douglases rose to become one of the most powerful noble families in late-medieval Scotland, holding the earldoms of Douglas (the 'Black Douglases') and Angus (the 'Red Douglases') and later Morton, and frequently wielding power behind the Stewart throne. The clan's heraldry — a crowned, bleeding heart — commemorates 'the Good Sir James' Douglas, the close companion-in-arms of Robert the Bruce. A romanticised legend also credits an 8th-century warrior, Sholto Douglas, as founder, though this is not historically substantiated.
