The Lamont Legacy
Clan Lamont is a Highland clan traditionally said to descend from the Irish prince Ánrothán Ua Néill, who once controlled the Cowal peninsula in Argyll from headquarters at Toward Castle, with lands stretching toward Loch Fyne. During the Wars of Independence the Lamont chief backed the MacDougalls against Robert the Bruce and suffered for it once Bruce secured the throne. The clan's darkest chapter came in 1646, during the Wars of the Three Kingdoms, when Clan Campbell, seeking revenge for losses at Inverlochy, was granted hospitality at Toward Castle and then massacred the Lamonts within it, killing many, including women and children; a memorial to the victims was erected at Dunoon in 1909. The Lamonts also sheltered a fugitive MacGregor chief for years after his own clan was proscribed. The clan lands were sold in 1893 and the chiefship passed to a cadet branch that had emigrated to Australia.
The clan's historic seat is associated with Toward Castle, Cowal (historic; clan lands sold in 1893).
