Clan Story

The MacArthur Legacy

Clan Arthur (MacArthur) is considered one of the oldest clans in Argyll, sharing a common medieval origin with Clan Campbell and once holding substantial lands around Loch Awe. An old Highland saying claims 'there is nothing older, unless the hills, MacArthur, and the devil.' The clan's fortunes rose after Robert the Bruce rewarded their support at Bannockburn in 1314 with additional lands taken from the defeated MacDougalls. Later centuries brought decline, and by the late 18th century the recognized chiefly line had died out, leaving the clan without a chief for roughly two centuries. Following genealogical research into the MacArthurs of Tirivadich, a new chief was formally recognized by the Lord Lyon in 2002 -- the first in over 230 years -- restoring formal clan leadership after a long armigerous period.

The clan's historic seat is associated with Tirivadich (Hayfield) / Innistrynich, Loch Awe.
