The MacFarlane Legacy
Clan MacFarlane claims descent from the ancient Earls of Lennox and was long based around Arrochar on the shores of Loch Lomond, in the Highland district of Argyll. Known for their martial reputation, the MacFarlanes were notorious cattle raiders, giving rise to the phrase 'MacFarlane's lantern' for the moonlight said to guide their raids. Despite this warlike history, the clan did not join the Jacobite risings of the 18th century. The direct male line of chiefs ended with Walter MacFarlane, a noted historian and antiquarian who died in 1767, after which clan lands were sold to settle debts. A final chief held the title until his death in 1866, and no chief has been recognized by the Lord Lyon since, leaving Clan MacFarlane an armigerous clan today.
The clan's historic seat is associated with Arrochar (historic; no standing castle documented).
