The Scrymgeour Legacy
Clan Scrymgeour's name likely derives from an Old French word for swordsman, reflecting the family's martial reputation. Its rise began with Sir Alexander Scrymgeour, a supporter of William Wallace who was named Constable of Dundee Castle and hereditary Royal Standard-Bearer of Scotland in 1298; a kinsman later carried the royal banner at Bannockburn in 1314. The family built Dudhope Castle near Dundee after acquiring the lands in 1495 and held the city's constableship for centuries. In 1641 the title Earl of Dundee was created for the family, though it fell dormant after the first earl died without heirs. A long dispute over the standard-bearer title and earldom was finally resolved in the family's favour in the early 20th century.
The clan's historic seat is associated with Dudhope Castle, Dundee (historic, until 1668).
