The Seton Legacy
The Seton family's name comes from Sai in Normandy, with Alexander de Seton recorded witnessing a royal charter around 1150. The family's fortunes became entwined with Robert the Bruce after Sir Christopher Seton married Bruce's sister and witnessed his coronation in 1306, only to be executed by the English soon after; his brother Alexander restored the family's standing and was among the nobles who signed the Declaration of Arbroath in 1320. Later generations produced the Earls of Winton and Earls of Dunfermline, and the family remained closely tied to Mary, Queen of Scots and, later, the Jacobite cause. Their historic seat was Seton Castle in East Lothian. The line's last recognized chief, George Seton, 5th Earl of Winton, forfeited his titles after the 1715 Jacobite rising.
