Wishart is a Scottish surname derived from the Old French 'Guischard'/'Wischard,' meaning prudent or wise, documented in Scotland from the medieval period under many spelling variants including Wishard, Wisheart, and Wiseheart. Its most historically significant bearer is George Wishart (c.1513-1546), a Protestant reformer burned for heresy whose preaching directly influenced John Knox and helped shape the Scottish Reformation. Sources describing Wishart as a clan note it currently has no chief recognized by the Lord Lyon, but they do not document a historic clan territory, castle seat, or continuous chiefly line comparable to a Highland or Border clan, suggesting the Wishart 'clan' identity rests primarily on shared surname and notable descendants rather than an organized clan structure.

The Wisharts were an influential Lowland ecclesiastical and legal family prominent from the 13th century. Robert Wishart, Bishop of Glasgow (1271-1316), was a key supporter of William Wallace and later Robert the Bruce during the Wars of Scottish Independence, while George Wishart, a leading figure of the Scottish Reformation, was burned for heresy in 1546 after also having Bruce-era family ties to the independence cause.
