Fergus: Irish Surname History & Coat of Arms

Mac Fearghusa; Ó Fearghuis, Ó Fearghusa · 'son of Fearghus' / 'descendant of Fearghus' (super-choice)

Woulfe (1923) lists Fergus among the anglicised forms of two different entries: Mac Fearghusa, 'son of Fearghus' (super-choice), which he calls 'the name of a Scottish family, some of whom settled in the north of Ireland in the early part of the 17th century'; and Ó Fearghuis, Ó Fearghusa, 'descendant of Fearghus', the name '(1) of a medical family in West Connacht who were hereditary physicians to the O'Malleys; and (2) of an ecclesiastical family in Co. Leitrim who were coarbs of St. Mogue, or erenaghs of Rossinver'. The same Ó Fearghuis entry also anglicises the name Ferris, and Woulfe adds that 'at the end of the 16th century, the name was very scattered'.
