Fogarty surname: questions
What does the surname Fogarty mean?
Woulfe gives Fogarty as a form of Ó Fógartaigh, 'descendant of Fógartach', which he glosses as 'proclaimed, banished, exiled'.[1]
Where in Ireland is Fogarty from?
Woulfe says the family, of Dalcassian origin according to O'Heerin, were chiefs of Eile Ui Fhogartaigh, now the barony of Elyogarty, Co. Tipperary. Matheson's 1890 birth index says more than half of Fogarty entries were in Tipperary and Dublin.[1][2]
Is Fogarty the same as O'Fogarty?
Woulfe gives O Fogartie and O Fogerty as forms of Ó Fógartaigh alongside Fogerty and Fogarty, and the Annals of the Four Masters (O'Donovan translation) spell the 1178 bishop of Ossory 'Donnell O'Fogarty'.[1][5]
Is Fogarty the same as Hogarty?
Woulfe says Ó Fógartaigh is 'sometimes changed, by the aspiration of the initial f, into Ó hÓgartaigh', and refers readers to that entry; he does not print Hogarty in this entry.[1]
