Foran: Irish Surname History & Coat of Arms

Ó Fuarráin, Ó Fuartháin · 'descendant of Fuarrán' or 'Fuarthán' (diminutive of fuar, cold)

Woulfe (1923) gives Foran as an anglicised form of Ó Fuarráin or Ó Fuartháin, 'descendant of Fuarrán' or 'Fuarthán' (diminutive of fuar, cold). He calls it the name of an old Munster family, still numerous in Waterford, Cork, Kerry and Limerick, but often, especially in Cork, disguised as Ford or Forde. In 1890 Ireland's birth indexes held 26 entries including spelling varieties (18 spelled Foran), principally found in Dublin, Limerick and Waterford.

The Foran coat of arms

'O FOREHANE' is printed in the 'List of Names of Irish Septs as given in the Book of Arms, compiled by Sir James Terry, Athlone Herald (1690)', as reproduced by Matheson. Woulfe prints 'O Forehan' and 'Forehane' among the forms of Ó Fuarráin; the list itself does not print Foran, so that link rests on the spelling. The list gives sept names only; it does not describe any arms, and it does not mean that everyone named Foran is entitled to a coat of arms.[5]

The design shown is a coat of arms associated with the Foran surname. In Irish and British heraldry a coat of arms is granted to one person and passes to their heirs; it does not belong to everyone who shares the surname. Many families still use the arms of their name as a symbol of their heritage.
