Goulding: Irish Surname History & Coat of Arms

Gúilín · 'son of Goldewine' or 'Goldwine' (Latin 'Goldinus'), an Anglo-Saxon personal name (Woulfe, under Gúilín)

Woulfe (1923) lists Goulding under several separate entries. Under Gúilín he gives Golding and Goulding as 'son of Goldewine', an Anglo-Saxon personal name, and says that under the form of Golding it came into Ireland soon after the Anglo-Norman invasion, when the family settled in Dublin, Meath, Kildare and parts of Munster. He also prints Goulding in brackets under Mag Ualghairg and in the plain lists under Ó Gabhláin and Ó Guallachta. In 1890 Matheson counts 27 Goulding birth entries in Ireland including spelling varieties (15 spelled Goulding).
