McColgan: Irish Surname History & Coat of Arms

Mac Colgan · 'son of Colga'

Woulfe (1923) gives MacColgan and Colgan as anglicised forms of Mac Colgan, 'son of Colga', more anciently Ó Colgan. He describes a sept of the Oirghialla who were chiefs of Ui MacCarthainn in Co. Derry until dispossessed by the Cinel Eoghain, and afterwards erenaghs of Donaghmore, in Inishowen; the hagiographer Father John Colgan was of this family. In 1890 all 16 McColgan birth entries in Ireland were in Ulster, principally Donegal and Londonderry.

The McColgan coat of arms

'MAC COLGAN' is printed in the 'List of Names of Irish Septs as given in the Book of Arms, compiled by Sir James Terry, Athlone Herald (1690)', as reproduced by Matheson. The list gives sept names only; it does not describe any arms, and it does not mean that everyone named McColgan is entitled to a coat of arms.[5]

The design shown is a coat of arms associated with the McColgan surname. In Irish and British heraldry a coat of arms is granted to one person and passes to their heirs; it does not belong to everyone who shares the surname. Many families still use the arms of their name as a symbol of their heritage.

McColgan surname: questions

What does the surname McColgan mean?

Woulfe gives McColgan as a form of Mac Colgan, 'son of Colga'.[1]

Where in Ireland is the McColgan name from?

Woulfe says the Mac Colgans were a sept of the Oirghialla, chiefs of Ui MacCarthainn in Co. Derry until dispossessed by the Cinel Eoghain, and afterwards erenaghs of Donaghmore, in Inishowen. In 1890 all 16 McColgan births in Ireland were in Ulster, principally in Donegal and Londonderry.[1][3]

Is McColgan the same name as Colgan?

Woulfe lists Colgan among the anglicised forms of Mac Colgan. He has a second entry, Ó Colgan, 'the name of an old family in Offaly, of the same stock as the O'Connors, O'Dempseys and O'Dunnes; also common in Thomond', whose forms also include Colgan, so not every Colgan belongs to the Derry sept. Woulfe cross-refers the two names: Mac Colgan 'more anciently Ó Colgan', Ó Colgan 'more anciently Mac Colgan'.[1][2]

Who was Father John Colgan?

A Franciscan of the Irish college at Louvain who published lives of the Irish saints: Acta Sanctorum Hiberniae (1645) and Trias Thaumaturga (1647). Woulfe says he was of the Mac Colgan family.[1][7][8]
