The name honors Donnchadh Reamhar, or 'Stout Duncan,' an early chief who supported Robert the Bruce during the Wars of Independence and from whom the wider kindred takes its Gaelic name, Clann Donnachaidh. Because of this shared origin, people bearing the Duncan surname are generally considered part of the Robertson/Donnachaidh clan rather than a separate clan with its own chief. Separately, a distinct family of Duncans held the barony of Lundie in Angus for generations; its most famous member, Admiral Adam Duncan, defeated the Dutch fleet at the Battle of Camperdown in 1797 and was later buried at Lundie.
