The MacLachlan Legacy

Clan MacLachlan is one of the older documented Highland clans, with charter evidence placing the family at Strathlachlan on Loch Fyne as early as 1292. Tradition traces the clan's descent from Irish royal lines reaching back to Niall of the Nine Hostages. The clan's stronghold, Castle Lachlan, stood on Loch Fyne from at least the 14th century. The MacLachlans were committed Jacobite supporters, fighting at Killiecrankie in 1689 and Sheriffmuir in 1715, and their chief was killed leading clansmen at Culloden in 1746. In the aftermath, a government ship shelled Castle Lachlan and the family's colours were burned in Edinburgh, though their lands were restored the following year with help from the Duke of Argyll. A new Castle Lachlan was later built near the original ruin and remains linked to the clan today.

The clan's historic seat is associated with Castle Lachlan, Strathlachlan.
