Clan Story

The Macnicol Legacy

Clan MacNicol, whose members use the Gaelic form MacNeacail, is a Hebridean clan with mixed Norse and Gaelic origins traditionally traced to medieval Norse princes. The earliest documented member appears in the 14th century as a supporter of Edward I. According to clan tradition, the family once held the Isle of Lewis before losing it through marriage to the MacLeods around 1343, after which they settled in Trotternish on Skye and became allied with the MacDonalds of Sleat. The clan's historic seat was Scorrybreac, and it was formally recognized with a chief in 1980. John MacNeacail of MacNeacail and Scorrybreac is recognized as the current chief, though he resides in Australia.

The clan's historic seat is associated with Scorrybreac, Isle of Skye.
