The Moncreiffe family took its name from Moncreiffe Hill, which lies between the Rivers Tay and Earn about three miles south-east of Perth, and has family records from the 12th century. The Moncreiffes have been associated with Atholl since before 1266, and in 1568 William of that Ilk made a treaty of mutual defence with the Murrays. The chief is the Hon. Peregrine Moncreiffe of that Ilk.
