The Munro Legacy
Clan Munro, whose Gaelic name Mac an Rothaich reflects a traditional link to the River Roe in Ireland, holds that its ancestors settled in Easter Ross around the 11th century after aiding a Scottish king against Viking raiders. The clan's seat, Foulis Castle near the Cromarty Firth, is documented from at least the 14th century, and a 1491 Gaelic inscription there poetically described it as 'castle gaunt-peaked, the eagle's nest,' reflecting the clan's eagle crest. A notable episode of clan history involves the imprisonment of the Mackay chief at Foulis in 1542, after which the two clans formed a lasting bond. The clan's war cry, 'Caisteal Foghlais na theine' ('Castle Foulis ablaze'), recalls the beacon once lit atop the castle to summon clansmen to arms. The original castle was rebuilt as a classical mansion in the 18th century after Culloden ended the need for Highland strongholds.
