The Rattrays take their name from the barony of Rattray in Perthshire, near Blairgowrie. Alanus de Rattrieff lived in the reigns of William the Lion and Alexander II, and in 1648 Charles I erected Craighall and other lands into a free barony called Craighall and Rattray.
