Clan Story

The Spalding Legacy

Clan Spalding's Scottish presence is documented from the late 13th century, with a John de Spaldyn witnessing Aberdeen land grants by 1294. The family rose to prominence in 1318 when Peter de Spalding, a burgess of Berwick, helped Robert the Bruce's forces retake the town from English control, receiving lands in Angus and keepership of a royal forest as reward. Its principal branch, Spalding of Ashintully, built Ashintully Castle in Perthshire around 1583. The family lived in Perthshire for generations, supported the Jacobite cause in the 18th century, and afterward dispersed to Germany, Sweden, the Caribbean, and North America. Today Clan Spalding has no chief and is classed as an armigerous clan, with recorded arms featuring a two-handed sword and a gateway with a raised portcullis.

The clan's historic seat is associated with Ashintully Castle, Perthshire.
