The Spens Legacy
Clan Spens, also spelled Spence, descends from an official title -- 'dispenser' or custodian -- held under the Stewarts in the twelfth century, and the family claims kinship with the ancient Earls of Fife. William de Spens acquired the barony of Lathallan in Fife in the early fifteenth century, and his descendant John Spens of Lathallan sat in the Scottish Parliament in 1434. One son, Patrick, served as a royal bodyguard sent to the French court and founded a noble line in France, while other descendants prospered as physicians, lawyers, and academics, including two presidents of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh. David Spens of Wormiston died fighting for Mary, Queen of Scots at Langside in 1568. The clan chiefship continues today through the Barons Spens.
The clan's historic seat is associated with Lathallan, Fife.
