McDermott: Irish Surname History & Coat of Arms

Mac Diarmada · 'son of Diarmaid' (an ancient and very common Irish personal name, anglicised Dermot, Darby and Jeremiah)

Woulfe (1923) gives MacDermott as the anglicised form of Mac Diarmada, 'son of Diarmaid'. He calls the MacDermotts of Moylurg the most important family of the name: a branch of the Sil-Murray of Connacht, of the same stock as the O'Connors, with their fortress at the Rock of Lough Key near Boyle. In 1890 McDermott births were found principally in Roscommon, Dublin, Donegal, Galway and Tyrone.

They took the surname from Diarmaid, grandson of Maolruanaidh, who died in 1159. The McDermott coat of arms

'MAC DERMOT' is printed in the 'List of Names of Irish Septs as given in the Book of Arms, compiled by Sir James Terry, Athlone Herald (1690)', as reproduced by Matheson. The list gives sept names only; it does not describe any arms, and it does not mean that everyone named McDermott is entitled to a coat of arms.[9]

The design shown is a coat of arms associated with the McDermott surname. In Irish and British heraldry a coat of arms is granted to one person and passes to their heirs; it does not belong to everyone who shares the surname. Many families still use the arms of their name as a symbol of their heritage.
