O'Keeffe: Irish Surname History & Coat of Arms

Ó Caoimh · 'descendant of Caomh' (beautiful, noble, gentle, loveable)

Woulfe (1923) gives O'Keeffe and Keeffe as anglicised forms of Ó Caoimh, 'descendant of Caomh'. He says the O'Keeffes are of the royal race of Munster, of the same stock as the MacCarthys and O'Callaghans, first seated at Glanworth in the barony of Fermoy and later in Pobble O'Keeffe in the north-west of the barony of Duhallow. In 1890 more than half of the O'Keeffe birth entries in Ireland were in Cork.

Originally seated at Glanworth (Roches' country, barony of Fermoy); driven out shortly after the Anglo-Norman invasion, they settled in north-west Duhallow, which they named Pobble O'Keeffe.[1]

The O'Keeffe coat of arms

'O KEEFE' is printed in the 'List of Names of Irish Septs as given in the Book of Arms, compiled by Sir James Terry, Athlone Herald (1690)', as reproduced by Matheson. The list gives sept names only; it does not describe any arms, and it does not mean that everyone named O'Keeffe is entitled to a coat of arms.[6]

The design shown is a coat of arms associated with the O'Keeffe surname. In Irish and British heraldry a coat of arms is granted to one person and passes to their heirs; it does not belong to everyone who shares the surname. Many families still use the arms of their name as a symbol of their heritage.
