Wellesley: Irish Surname History & Coat of Arms

Uaisléigh · Norman 'de Welleslegh', i.e. of Wellesley, a spot in Somerset

Woulfe (1923) lists Wellesley with Wesleie and Wesley under Uaisléigh, Norman 'de Welleslegh', 'of Wellesley, corruptly Wesley, a spot in Somerset, a short distance from Wells'. He says the family came to Ireland at the time of the Anglo-Norman invasion and settled in Kildare and Meath, and that the Duke of Wellington belonged to the Meath branch. Webb adds that Richard Colley took the surname Wesley under a 1728 bequest from Garrett Wesley of Dangan, Co. Meath, and that Colley's descendants reverted to the form Wellesley about 1796.

The Wellesley coat of arms

Webb (1878) says the 1728 bequest of Garrett Wesley required Richard Colley and his heirs male to take 'the surname and coat-of-arms of Wesley'. This is a note on one family's inheritance, not a record that everyone named Wellesley is entitled to arms.[3]

The design shown is a coat of arms associated with the Wellesley surname. In Irish and British heraldry a coat of arms is granted to one person and passes to their heirs; it does not belong to everyone who shares the surname. Many families still use the arms of their name as a symbol of their heritage.
