The Hopes prospered in Edinburgh, and John's grandson Sir Thomas Hope became Lord Advocate under Charles I in 1626, is credited with helping to draft the National Covenant, bought Craighall in Fife and was made a Nova Scotia baronet in 1628. His descendants, the Hopes of Craighall, became the recognized chiefly line, while a junior branch, the Hopes of Hopetoun, was raised to the Earldom of Hopetoun in 1703 and has held the Marquessate of Linlithgow since 1902
