The Hope Legacy
Clan Hope traces its documented origin to John de Hope, said to have come to Scotland from France in 1537 in the retinue of James V's first wife, though the surname itself may derive instead from an older Scottish Borders family. The Hopes prospered in Edinburgh, and Sir Thomas Hope rose to become Lord Advocate under Charles I, helped draft the National Covenant, and acquired the estate of Craighall in Fife before being created a Nova Scotia baronet in 1628. His descendants, the Hopes of Craighall, became the recognized chiefly line, while a junior branch, the Hopes of Hopetoun, was elevated to the Earldom of Hopetoun in 1703 and later the Marquessate of Linlithgow. The family also held estates in West Lothian, East Lothian and Lanarkshire. The current chief is Sir Alexander Archibald Douglas Hope, 19th Baronet of Craighall.
The clan's historic seat is associated with Craighall, Fife (historic).
