About this tartan
Duncan is best understood not as an independent clan but as the principal surname associated with Clan Donnachaidh, more widely known today as Clan Robertson. The name honors Donnchadh Reamhar, or 'Stout Duncan,' an early chief who supported Robert the Bruce during the Wars of Independence and from whom the wider kindred takes its Gaelic name, Clann Donnachaidh. Because of this shared origin, people bearing the Duncan surname are generally considered part of the Robertson/Donnachaidh clan rather than a separate clan with its own chief
