About this tartan

Clan MacGillivray is a Highland clan of the Clan Chattan Confederation, tracing to the Gaelic Clan Mhic Gillebrath, who were based around Mull and Morvern before being dispersed by Alexander II's suppression of Argyll in 1222. Tradition holds that the clan chief sought the protection of the Mackintosh chiefs, bringing MacGillivray into the Chattan confederation. From around 1550 the clan's chiefs held Dunmaglass in Stratherrick, which served as their seat for thirteen generations; the family's Jacobite loyalty proved costly when chief Alexander MacGillivray was killed leading the Clan Chattan regiment at Culloden in 1746
