The Young Legacy
The Young name became established in Scotland by the 13th century, with early records placing the family in Dumbarton and later in the Border country, where they aligned with larger reiving families during that region's turbulent history. The clan's most notable historical figure was Sir Peter Young (1544-1628), tutor to King James VI, whose descendants held the chiefship until it lapsed in 1672. The family later acquired Auldbar Castle near Brechin in Angus. Clan Young is today classed as armigerous, having had no Lord-Lyon-recognized chief since the 17th century, though a descendant of Young of Auldbar was granted permission in 1989 to revive a crest badge for members of the name.
The clan's historic seat is associated with Auldbar (Aldbar) Castle, near Brechin, Angus (demolished 1965).
