2. Clan Butter History (Butter Tartan)

This surname, which is popular in Fife and Perthshire and can also be found as Buttar and Butters, may be related to the old name Buttercask, the name of a settlement in the parish of Ardoch.

The Butters of Gormock were an even older family in the same county. Butter was the name of an old family in Perthshire, specifically Pitlochry, where they owned the lands of Fascally.

Adam Butir's escheat is documented in 1331, and in Gowrie's "super ylef" in 1360, William Butyr and Patrick Butir are noted as contribution collectors.

A piece of oxhide was given to fisherman James Buttir in 1511 so he could make his currach.

Several people with this name are recorded in the Acts of Parliament and Laing (Charters), and Butterlaw Loche, Butterlaw Syke, and Butterlaw Cairne are also referenced in the same charter that was issued by the Swinton lordship in 1656.

The name appears frequently in the records of the Dunkeld Presbytery and Diocese (Dunkeld Cathedral is shown in the top image).

Butter path in Kincardineshire, which was once a drovers' route across the Ochils, gets its name from the old Gaelic word "bothar," which means "a road for cattle."

3. Clan Butter Tartans

Since there isn't a certified Butter tartan, those who go by that name can don the Perthshire District tartan, which honors the area where the name was formerly found.
