$19.99Clan Napier is a Lowland family traditionally said to descend from the Earls of Lennox, with one legend claiming the name arose when a king praised an ancestor's battlefield bravery by declaring he had 'nae peer.' A more prosaic theory ties the name to the medieval household office of 'naperer,' overseer of table linen. The family's documented rise began with Alexander Napier, who acquired the Merchiston estate near Edinburgh from James I in the 15th century and served as the city's provost. Their most famous descendant, John Napier, 8th Laird of Merchiston, invented logarithms in the early 17th century and also sketched early designs for military devices
