2.  Colquhoun Clan History  (Colquhoun Tartan) 

Malcolm, Earl of Lennox, gave Humphrey of Kilpatrick the Colquhoun estate in Dunbartonshire in 1241, under the reign of Alexander II. Ingram, Humphrey's son, is the first person known to have adopted Colquhoun as his last name.

Sir Robert Colquhoun obtained Luss, on Loch Lomond, through marriage sometime around 1368. Colquhoun and Luss have been referred to as the chiefship ever since.

Iain Colquhoun of Luss, his grandson, wed Margaret, the earl of Lennox's daughter. A few years later, in 1424, James I (top image), who had been imprisoned in England, exacted revenge on a number of persons, including the uncooperative Lennox.

Lennox's position was shattered, and Iain of Luss used this to his advantage to take control of Dumbarton Castle from Lennox and win the King's favor.

By 1427, he was the sheriff of Dumbarton, and by 1439, he had been murdered by those who had treated him so terribly, just like his King.

James II granted Sir Iain Colquhoun, the grandson of Colquhoun, a free barony in Luss as payment. This situation persisted up until the 1745 Uprising.

When the thieving MacGregors raided Luss in 1603, it resulted in a violent combat where 400 MacGregor soldiers defeated 500 Colquhoun soldiers, 300 of them were mounted, near Glen Fruin.

When the MacGregors, who had split into two parties, struck from the front and rear and forced the riders onto the soft ground of the Moss of Auchingaich, more than 200 of the Colquhoun men perished.

It denoted the Gregor Clan's banishment.

The conflict between the clans wasn't resolved until the eighteenth century, when the leaders of Clans Gregor and Colquhoun met and shook hands at Glen Fruin, the scene of the massacre.

In 1625, Sir John Colquhoun, the 11th Laird of Luss, was created a Baronet of Nova Scotia. However, he too disappeared with his wife's sister, Lady Catherine Graham, seven years later.

He made the correct decision to go and never come back because he was suspected of utilizing witchcraft and sorcery to win her over.

The family is presently seated at Rossdhu's enormous mansion.

The Colquhoun tartan is a Wilson's of Bannockburn tartan that has a long history. In 1810, it was added to the Cockburn collection, and a sample was sent to the Highland Society of London about 1816, with the Chief's signature and seal.

Robert Colquhoun (1914-62)

Colquhoun, a Kilmarnock native who later attended the Glasgow School of Art, became the recipient of travel scholarships thanks to his expressive portrait drawings. In 1937 and 1939, he was allowed to attend classes in Italy.

Colquhoun changed his focus from Neo Romantic landscapes to figure work under Jankel Adler's influence, which formed the foundation of his most productive era, which lasted from 1944 to 1947.

His artwork from this period depicted people in dejected and miserable states, much like Picasso's somber pictures. Following this, the public's acceptance of his work and its quality fluctuated, and his drinking started to interfere.

He was back in top form, though, as seen by his 1951 assignment to design the scenery and costumes for the Scottish Ballet's performance of Massine's "Donald of the Burthens," and his 1953 work at Stratford for George Devine on "King Lear" garnered praise.

Colquhoun first met Robert MacBryde at the Glasgow School of Art. The two became known as "the two Roberts" and went on to have a long-lasting professional and love connection.

At the age of 47, Robert Colquhoun passed away from alcoholism in 1962.
