Clan Duncan (Duncan Tartan)

1. Clan Duncan History

Duncan is one of Scotland's oldest names, sharing common ancestry with Clan Robertson through the ancient Earls of Atholl. Their shared founder, Donnachadh Reamhar, "Fat Duncan," led the clan at the Battle of Bannockburn and gave the Duncan name to his descendants. By the 15th century, Duncans and their Duncanson relatives were established throughout central and southeastern Scotland.

2. How Duncan Became Robertson

After King James I was murdered in 1437, his follower Robert Ruabh Duncanson tracked down and captured the killers, earning a royal reward. In gratitude, his relatives began calling themselves "Robert's sons," eventually simplified to Robertson, while members of Clan Robertson still proudly call themselves Donnachaidhs, "Children of Duncan," to this day. Duncan is recognized as a principal sept of Clan Robertson alongside Reid.

3. Clan Duncan Crest & Tartan

The Duncan crest, a ship under full sail, pairs with the motto "Disce Pati," learn to suffer, distinct from the Robertson crest of a hand holding an imperial crown. Duncan and Robertson each maintain their own registered tartans today, worn separately as part of each family's regalia.

4. Clan Duncan Modern Distribution

Historically concentrated in Fife, Angus, and Perthshire, the Duncans of Lundie in Forfarshire were the family's predominant branch until the death of the 4th Earl of Camperdown in 1933, closing out a long line of Duncan prominence in eastern Scotland.
